Browser extensions

Save any web page as a clean Markdown note, from Safari or any Chromium browser.

The Gisti Web Clipper extension saves the page you’re reading into Gisti as a Markdown note. One click: the readable content is extracted (no ads, no navigation, no cookie banners), converted to Markdown, and lands in your Stream with the page title and a link back to the source.

How it works

  • Click the Gisti button in the browser toolbar, or right-click the page and choose Save to Gisti.
  • Extraction uses Mozilla’s Readability (the engine behind Firefox Reader Mode), so you get the article, not the page chrome. Headings, lists, tables, code blocks, links, and images survive the conversion.
  • The badge on the toolbar icon confirms the result: OK saved, ! something went wrong.
  • Nothing leaves your Mac – the extension hands the content to the Gisti app on the same machine and makes no network requests of its own.

The saved note is a regular note: search, semantic search, topics, and AI summaries all apply. Text selections don’t need the extension at all – copy them and clipboard capture picks them up.

Safari

The extension ships inside the app. Nothing to download:

  1. In Gisti: Settings → Browser Extensions → Safari extension. This opens Safari’s extension settings.
  2. Enable Gisti Web Clipper there.

Safari asks for permission per site the first time you save a page from it.

Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi

Two steps, once:

  1. In Gisti: Settings → Browser Extensions → Chromium browsers → Connect. macOS will ask you to grant access to the Application Support folder. This registers Gisti with every Chromium-based browser found on the Mac.
  2. Install Gisti Web Clipper from the Chrome Web Store (Settings → Browser Extensions → Get the extension).

The extension only activates on the page you explicitly save. It requests no blanket access to your browsing.

Notes

  • Works on regular http(s) pages; browser-internal pages (settings, web stores, PDF viewers) can’t be clipped.
  • On pages that aren’t articles (dashboards, login walls) the whole visible content is converted instead. The result is still Markdown, just less tidy.
  • If saving fails in a Chromium browser (the extension console shows Specified native messaging host not found), connect Gisti first (Settings → Browser Extensions → Chromium browsers → Connect) and then restart the browser – it reads the registration at launch.
